アンダース・ペーターセンは、スウェーデンを代表する最も重要かつ国際的に高く評価されている写真家の一人です。
彼の代表作である『Café Lehmitz』は、1967年から1970年にかけて、ドイツ・ハンブルクのバー「カフェ・レーミッツ」に集う人々を記録したドキュメンタリー作品です。赤線地帯にあるこのバーには、港湾労働者、売春婦、アルコール中毒者、ドラッグ中毒者など、社会の底辺と見なされがちな人々が集っていました。
しかし、アンダースは彼らをジャーナリスティックな視点で捉えるのではなく、まるで家族を見守るようなまなざしでカメラを向けています。
当時23歳の若手写真家だったアンダースは、この作品を出版しようと試みるものの、なかなか実現せず、8年後の1978年にようやく作品集としてまとめられました。また、本作の一枚は、音楽家トム・ウェイツの名盤『Rain Dogs』のアルバムカバー写真として使用されたことでも知られています。
『Café Lehmitz』は現在も出版や展示が続けられており、ドキュメンタリー写真の名作として次世代へと受け継がれています。

世界各地で展示をし、多数のアワードも受賞している。また、数多くの写真集も出版している。
直感的で親密なドキュメンタリースタイルのモノクロ写真を撮る。
アンダースの作品は、ストックホルム写真美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館、ハッセルブラッド・センター、パリ国立図書館、ポンピドゥー・センター、ローマ現代美術館、ヒューストン美術館、ストックホルム近代美術館、フォルクヴァング・エッセン美術館、ヴィンタートゥール写真美術館などに収蔵されている。8０歳になった現在でも精力的に活動していて、2024年にはスウェーデンにあるハッセルブラッドセンターで大規模な個展を開催している。

Anders Petersen is one of Sweden’s most important and internationally acclaimed photographers.
His iconic work, Café Lehmitz, is a documentary series that captures the people who gathered at the bar “Café Lehmitz” in Hamburg, Germany, between 1967 and 1970. Located in the red-light district, the bar was a haven for dockworkers, prostitutes, alcoholics, and drug addicts—people often perceived as existing on the fringes of society. However, rather than portraying them from a journalistic perspective, Anders photographed them with the affectionate gaze of someone watching over family.
At the time, Anders was a 23-year-old photographer and it took years for his efforts to publish this work to be realised. Finally, in 1978, the pictures from Café Lehmitz were compiled into a photobook. One of the images from this series is well known as the album cover for Rain Dogs, a masterpiece by musician Tom Waits.
To this day, Café Lehmitz continues to be published and exhibited as a landmark work of documentary photography.
Anders Petersen
Born in 1944 in Sweden. He currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
He has exhibited internationally and received numerous awards since 1969. He has also published many photobooks. Anders shoots black and white photographs in an intuitive and intimate documentary style.
Anders Petersen’s work is represented in the collections of Fotografiska, Stockholm; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hasselblad Center, Gothenburg; The Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Roma; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; Museum Folkwang, Essen; and Fotomuseum Winterthur, among others.
At the age of 80, he is still very active, and in 2024 he will hold a major solo exhibition at the Hasselblad Center in Sweden.
